We thrive on a culture of relentless innovation, ownership, and accountability, where every team member takes pride in their work and drives it with excellence and urgency. As an Nscaler, you'll build trust through openness and transparency, where everyone is inspired to do their best work. If you join our team, you'll be contributing to building the technology that powers the future.
About the Role
The Data Hall Designer produces detailed design documentation that turns an empty data hall into a precisely organized, fully documented AI infrastructure environment. You'll work within the standards and frameworks established by the Lead, Data Hall Design to produce drawing packages, cabling plans, fiber layouts, patch matrices, rack elevations, and bills of materials for active Nscale programs.
This is a hands-on production role that requires both technical depth and drawing precision - the outputs of this role go directly to construction and installation teams, and errors have real consequences.
The ideal candidate is genuinely passionate about data center infrastructure: the kind of person who finds rack layout optimization interesting, knows the difference between OS2 and OM4 fiber without looking it up, and takes satisfaction in a clean, traceable cable plan. You're comfortable working in fast-moving environments, managing multiple active programs, and collaborating closely with network engineers, MEP designers, procurement, and construction teams.
What You'll be Doing
- Produce data hall layout drawings for assigned programs: rack placement, row orientation, aisle configuration, cooling zone boundaries, and maintenance access paths
- Develop rack elevation drawings for all rack types: GPU servers, network switches, storage arrays, patch panels, PDUs, cable managers, and blanking panels
- Apply Nscale's data hall layout standards and templates, adapting them to site-specific conditions while maintaining compliance with design requirements
- Coordinate with MEP engineers to validate that rack layouts reflect correct power feed locations, cooling supply and return positions, and structural load limits
- Design fiber tray layouts, cable tray routing, and cable management for copper and fiber throughout assigned data halls
- Produce fiber optic cabling plans specifying fiber type, connector type, run lengths, slack management, and bend radius compliance
- Develop patch matrix documentation at the port level for all network, storage, and management cabling on assigned programs
- Apply Nscale's cabling labeling standards and color coding conventions consistently across all deliverables
- Produce physical network topology diagrams from logical designs provided by network engineering, translating switch and server placement, inter-rack cabling, and cable lengths into precise physical drawings
- Support the Lead, Data Hall Design in developing GPU fabric physical layouts: InfiniBand rail topologies, spine-leaf Ethernet implementations, and storage network physical designs
- Produce complete, accurate BOMs for data hall equipment, cabling, transceivers, and hardware on assigned programs, flagging required substitutions and long-lead procurement risks
- Develop and maintain DCIM asset documentation for assigned programs through construction and handoff to Operations
- Collaborate with network engineers, MEP designers, procurement, and construction teams; respond promptly to RFIs and field questions, updating drawings as field conditions require
About You
- 5+ years of experience in data center design, IT infrastructure planning, structured cabling design, or data hall operations
- Solid understanding of data center rack layouts (GPU servers, network switches, storage, and supporting hardware) and how layout decisions affect cooling, power, cabling, and operations
- Working knowledge of structured cabling: fiber types, connector types, cable management, and the basics of high-density fiber design
- Experience producing data hall drawings using AutoCAD, Visio, or equivalent tools: layout plans, rack elevations, cabling plans, and topology diagrams
- Familiarity with network topology concepts: spine-leaf, ToR switching, InfiniBand, and Ethernet-based datacenter networks
- Experience developing bills of materials for data center hardware and cabling
- Comfortable working in fast-paced, multi-program environments with demanding schedules
- Detail-oriented and precise; takes ownership of drawing accuracy and BOM completeness
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Network Engineering, Information Technology, or related technical discipline preferred; an Associate's degree or technical certification combined with strong hands-on experience will also be considered
Nice to Have
- Experience designing GPU server environments: NVIDIA DGX/HGX, SuperPOD, or equivalent AI compute infrastructure
- Familiarity with InfiniBand networking physical design and GPU rail topology
- Experience with DCIM platforms such as Netbox, Nlyte, or Sunbird
- Knowledge of direct liquid cooling or immersion cooling physical integration
- BICSI RCDD or equivalent structured cabling certification
- Experience at a hyperscale datacenter operator or AI cloud provider
Why this role matters
This role offers significant long-term growth. As Nscale's portfolio expands, strong performers will have the opportunity to take on lead responsibilities for individual programs and ultimately progress toward the Lead, Data Hall Design role. The accuracy and clarity of this work directly reduces field rework and delays, keeps procurement and installation schedules on track, and ensures Operations inherits a complete, accurate asset record at turnover.
